The vehicles’ second-row seat backs may fail to lock during adjustment, which could increase injury risk in a crash.

WASHINGTON — Toyota is recalling more than 550,000 vehicles in the United States because a defect involving second-row seat backs could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

According to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain 2021-2024 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models may have seat backs that fail to lock into position when adjusted. A seat back that doesn’t properly lock may not adequately restrain an occupant during a collision.

The recall affects an estimated 550,007 vehicles. The issue concerns the return springs in the seat-back recliner assemblies, which may need replacement.

Toyota dealers will perform the repair free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed around April 20, 2026.

Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 for more information. The recall reference numbers are 26TB06 and 26TA06.
